Invited single-authored chapter in a volume edited by Cunliffe, Gosden & Joyce (2009), exploring the evidence for the development and spread of Homo sapiens sapiens throughout the Old World between 200 and 20 thousand years ago. An approach based upon the development of modern behaviours, and their varying presence in time and space throughout the study period was adopted.
