Abstract

The ability to fabricate nonlinear optical materials with periodic or aperiodic spatial modulation of the nonlinearity has provided an enormous increase in the capability and versatility of frequency-conversion devices. This talk will start with a ‘tutorial’ introduction to the principles of these quasi-phase-matched materials, and then review performance achieved with them. Future prospects will also be reviewed, including the question of whether such materials would allow optical parametric oscillators to dethrone currently reigning lasers such as the Ti:sapphire laser
