Ring expansion of readily available zirconacyclopentadienes or zirconacyclopentanes by insertion of chloro(trimethylsilyl)rnethyllithium followed by metathesis with phosphorous trichloride provides a novel route to lambda(3)-phosphinines (phosphabenzenes) or phosphinanes.
