Description/Abstract

The furfural concentration in 500kV shunt reactor oil has been investigated to assess the overheating problems that are regarded as one of the most common defects. The research indicates that the average ageing rate of the whole oil impregnated paper insulation in shunt reactor does not exceed that in power transformers. As a result, the conclusion can be deducted that major heating spots in shunt reactors do not involve the paper insulation in the winding instead they are most likely on the metal elements due to eddy current loss.
