State maps are constructed for systems of linear partial di�erential equations involving a time and spatial variable. The construction is based on integration by parts with respect to the time variable and factorization of a polynomial matrix which is directly obtained from the di�fferential operator describing the PDEs. It is shown how the resulting state satis�es a partial diff�erential equation which is �rst-order in the time variable.
