Welfare and behaviour of aquarium animals
Welfare and behaviour of aquarium animals
Animal welfare is the concern for the mental and physical well-being of the animals in our care. It is multidisciplinary involving science, ethics, economics and politics.
UK animal welfare law is based on the five freedoms:
1) Freedom from hunger and thirst
2) Freedom from discomfort
3) Freedom from pain, injury and disease
4) Freedom to express normal behaviour
5) Freedom from fear and distress
The behaviour an animal expresses in captivity is linked to its welfare. In order to avoid suffering it is necessary over a period of time for the animal to perform all the behaviours in its repertoire because it is all functional. This poster discusses the work we are doing to improve the welfare of aquatic animals in a captive environment.

Abstract
Animal welfare is the concern for the mental and physical well-being of the animals in our care. It is multidisciplinary involving science, ethics, economics and politics.
UK animal welfare law is based on the five freedoms:

3) Freedom from pain, injury and disease
4) Freedom to express normal behaviour
5) Freedom from fear and distress
The behaviour an animal expresses in captivity is linked to its welfare. In order to avoid suffering it is necessary over a period of time for the animal to perform all the behaviours in its repertoire because it is all functional. This poster discusses the work we are doing to improve the welfare of aquatic animals in a captive environment.
