Concilier les ambitions militaires et les intérêts civils: l'occupation anglaise de la Normandie (1417-1450)
In the context of an occupation or of a peace-keeping operation, political considerations play a major part, and ‘interfere’ with military considerations. This has little to do with a clear-cut fight between two enemy armies, but rather with a game around strategic and political stakes in which a number of players are involved, the local population, the ancient and new regimes, the authorities and their agents, and finally the soldiers themselves. This paper’s aim is to review these themes within the context of the conquest and occupation of Normandy by the English in the first half of the XVth century.

Abstract

In the context of an occupation or of a peace-keeping operation, political considerations play a major part, and ‘interfere’ with military considerations. This has little to do with a clear-cut fight between two enemy armies, but rather with a game around strategic and political stakes in which a number of players are involved, the local population, the ancient and new regimes, the authorities and their agents, and finally the soldiers themselves. This paper’s aim is to review these themes within the context of the conquest and occupation of Normandy by the English in the first half of the XVth century.
