Lectures to women on physical science

Abstract

My book project goes back to the formation of British professional science across the Victorian period to trace the consequences of the formal decisions it makes to exclude women fundamentally, but not fully or finally. It will do this by scrutinizing neglected poetry on science and gender by women and male scientists. The project contends that such poetry discloses hidden histories of science, sexuality and gender, and can yield fine-grained understandings of attitudes to women in science that are not available from other genres and sources - but which nevertheless persist, elusive but influential, in contemporary cultures of science.
