Effects of changes in curvatures on the natural characteristics of curved structures
This paper presents the effects of curvature on the natural dynamic characteristics of curved beams and strips. Non-dimensional governing equations for curved beams, in which the curvature is taken as a function of the length of the arch, are derived. Numerical results show that curvature affects the natural dynamic behaviour of curved beams significantly. Different types of curvature show different impacts on the natural dynamic behaviour. Examples illustrate that the effect of curvature is also strongly related to the boundary conditions. Numerical models are then extended to two-dimensional curved strips. Lateral vibration is investigated and additional features due to changes of curvature are revealed. The analysis is further developed to model the curved laminated composite beams.
