Description/Abstract
In the context of this textbook aimed at students working on sport studies courses, this chapter provides an overview of the role that history as a discipline plays in the social study of sport. It looks at the growth and diversity of sports historiography, the inter-relations between historiography and other disciplines, and the benefits that sport students can gain from studying history, such as an avoidance of anachronism, and an appreciation of contexts.
