Description/Abstract

The subject of responsible ownership is often talked about when we consider the relationship between owners and their pets. This topic raises issues of moral responsibility for the animal’s welfare and for that of people with whom the animal may have contact. What is less likely to be discussed is how such moral values and actions have been translated into laws. That is, the professional being aware of the legal responsibilities of the owner and ensuring the owner is also clear about these responsibilities. All too many owners fall foul of the law simply because they were not aware of it, which is no defence in a court. In this case ignorance is not bliss.
