Learning Disability, The Internet and Self: A Role for AT Professionals
A survey of personal home pages written by people with Down’s Syndrome was conducted in order to investigate the extent to which they use the pages to express their identity. Opportunistic sampling of the pages listed by five Internet Service Providers revealed twenty personal home pages of adults with Down’s Syndrome. Thematic analysis of the content, form and language of the pages revealed similarities and differences in the way the page owners expressed and perceived their self-identity. The results suggest that adults with Down's Syndrome are using personal home pages to express multiple identities but that may need technical support from AT Professionals in order to allow them to present an image of themselves that is not overly influenced by others
