Design of experiments in commericial off the shelf CFD: frameworks for efficiency
Aerodynamic geometry optimization using design of experiments coupled with response surfaces has been established as an efficient way of searching for designs that offer the best performance within a design space. In a realistic design environment limits on computational resources mean simulations in large optimization studies are done somewhat sequentially, hence the data from early runs is available if needed by later simulations. By effective ordering of the simulations, manipulation and recalculation of the flow-field data available, a framework for highly effective design of experiments dataset creation has been created.

Abstract

Aerodynamic geometry optimization using design of experiments coupled with response surfaces has been established as an efficient way of searching for designs that offer the best performance within a design space. In a realistic design environment limits on computational resources mean simulations in large optimization studies are done somewhat sequentially, hence the data from early runs is available if needed by later simulations. By effective ordering of the simulations, manipulation and recalculation of the flow-field data available, a framework for highly effective design of experiments dataset creation has been created.
