Corporate social responsibility: what's in a name?
Corporate social responsibility: what's in a name?
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as practice is nothing new, although an identity crisis could potentially exist due to the blossoming number of terms used to describe social, community, environmental, philanthropic and ethical concerns in business. Debates surrounding terms and definitions are perhaps of more academic rather than practical importance or relevance. However, labels and terminology are central to our understanding of phenomena, together with the implicit or explicit values and beliefs that such terms invoke. This article examines some of the terms used to describe CSR-related activities; takes a snap-shot of usage in both theory and practice before going on to ask questions about whether a new direction is required in order to strengthen CSR's identity
