Deconstructing gender and social justice in a democratic society
The Millennium Goal for gender equality in education has been criticised for its weak conceptualisation of the nature of gender inequality and policies to bring about change. This paper reviews the contested ways in which both gender and social justice are conceived and the formulation of the goals and actions which follow. It suggests that, for example, binaries of male and female, and Anglophone-centric notions of patriarchy considerably oversimplify the diversity of current views about equality. It further argues for a more complex and plural approach to understanding gender and social justice, and the policies and practice that are needed to bring about change in a democratic society

Abstract

The Millennium Goal for gender equality in education has been criticised for its weak conceptualisation of the nature of gender inequality and policies to bring about change. This paper reviews the contested ways in which both gender and social justice are conceived and the formulation of the goals and actions which follow. It suggests that, for example, binaries of male and female, and Anglophone-centric notions of patriarchy considerably oversimplify the diversity of current views about equality. It further argues for a more complex and plural approach to understanding gender and social justice, and the policies and practice that are needed to bring about change in a democratic society
