The use of formation level props to support an embedded cantilever retaining wall can be advantageous in terms of minimizing thedepth of embedment required for stability/ serviceability. This type of wall is being used increasingly for grade-separated interchanges in connection with road improvement schemes in urban areas. Unfortunately, the analysis of these structures is not straightforward: indeed, they are specifically excluded from the ambit of CIRIA Report 1 0 4 on the design of retaining walls embedded in stiff clay...
