Description/Abstract

This volume is intended as a contribution to the commemoration of the 2009 novocentenary of the diocese, and will specifically be concerned with the bishops, diocese and parishes, for there is already a substantial modern history of the cathedral. This 15,000-word essay treats the diocese of Ely as a case study, examining how far the activity of the bishops remodelled the religious life of the diocese. It considers their effect upon aspects long considered important, such as the patronage and appropriation of churches, but goes beyond that into consideration of the practical ability of senior churchmen to initiate change, how far laypeople were aware of the diocese, and their response to its activity
