Midwife Alone
Midwife Alone
This article describes my involvement on two working parties set up to formulate national guidelines (under the auspices of the NICE). These were Electronic Fetal Monitoring in Labour (RCOG Clinical Effectiveness Support Unit, 2001a) and Induction of Labour (RCOG Clinical Effectiveness Support Unit, 2001b). My role in the development of the guidelines has been portrayed and I have identified challenges raised and lessons learnt from the process. These include the need to play the political game while adhering to values that are important to midwifery; also the importance of representing a wide spectrum of (midwifery) views in as fair and articulate manner as possible. The article concludes with suggestions for how midwives can contribute positively to future guideline development and, in so doing, strengthen the midwifery perspective.
