Activism & representations of motherhood in the autobiography of Dolores Ibarruri, Pasionaria
In November 1985, at the funeral of Dolores Ibárruri, the communist activist universally known as Pasionaria, the leader of the Spanish Communist Party (PCE), Julio Anguita, bid farewell to his late colleague with these words:

Duerme, compañera Ibárruri.
Reposa, camarada Pasionaria.
Descansa, Presidenta.
Sueña dulcemente, Madre Dolores.
(Cruz 1999: 17)

[Sleep, companion Ibárruri.
Repose, comrade Pasionaria.
Rest, President.
Dream sweetly, Mother Dolores.]

With these four lines, Anguita summed up a life which had spanned most of the 20th century – the life of a woman who had been friend and colleague, comrade, Party President, and mother.
