Abstract

The initial science of naval architecture relied heavily on experimentation due to the lack of suitable mathematical models. Hindsight shows that these depended on theoretical advances in other fields of science and engineering such as applied mechanics and structures, oceanography, wave theory and fluid dynamics, probability and random process theories, etc. Even when mathematical models were available simplifications to the theory were necessary to allow deprivation of practical solutions.
