The development of upholstery conservation as a practice of investigation, interpretation and preservation
The development of upholstery conservation as a specialist discipline is analysed, looking at the ways in which the discipline has developed since the late 1960s. Case studies drawn from the published literature illustrate changes in approach, for instance, to documentation and investigation of extant materials and to the conservation of original materials.
Current trends in the 'rebuilding' of missing elements with new material and the restoration of an upholstered appearance to bare frames are discussed. A glossary of terms has been provided to clarify essential terminology.

Abstract

The development of upholstery conservation as a specialist discipline is analysed, looking at the ways in which the discipline has developed since the late 1960s. Case studies drawn from the published literature illustrate changes in approach, for instance, to documentation and investigation of extant materials and to the conservation of original materials.
Current trends in the 'rebuilding' of missing elements with new material and the restoration of an upholstered appearance to bare frames are discussed. A glossary of terms has been provided to clarify essential terminology.
