Beethoven's unborn children

Beethoven's unborn children
Beethoven's unborn children
A study of Beethoven's early sketches in the "Kafka" and "Fischhof" miscellanies, which argues that ideas that Beethoven appears to reject for the finished version of his music often find a use later on in his oeuvre. Specific reference is made to sketches for a "Minuet in A flat" which are used in the slow movement of the "Pathetique" Sonata, Op. 13 (1799), and for the finale of the Piano Sonata Op. 10, No. 1, whose structure is transferred into the development of the first movement of the Quartet in C minor, Op. 18, No. 4 (1800)

Abstract

A study of Beethoven's early sketches in the "Kafka" and "Fischhof" miscellanies, which argues that ideas that Beethoven appears to reject for the finished version of his music often find a use later on in his oeuvre. Specific reference is made to sketches for a "Minuet in A flat" which are used in the slow movement of the "Pathetique" Sonata, Op. 13 (1799), and for the finale of the Piano Sonata Op. 10, No. 1, whose structure is transferred into the development of the first movement of the Quartet in C minor, Op. 18, No. 4 (1800)
