Since the 1990s a proliferation of the autobiographical can be observed in the writings of Jewish novelists in Austria.
This chapter aims to discuss this trend in connection with the changes in Jewish self-perception. Jewish identity, today is often perceived as a life-style decision. This subjective Jewishness does, beyond Orthodoxy, not admit to binding definitions of what is Jewish. In this respect the autobiographical can be read as the presentation of the author's Jewishness to his or her Jewish and non-Jewish readers.
