This research study was commissioned by the DfES to enhance understanding about the role of the school in shaping the perceptions and choices of post 16 pathways amongst young people in school. The research is based on a series of qualitative interviews in 24 schools across 9 LEAs. Focus groups were undertaken with young people in Years 10,11 and 12, and interviews were conducted with headteachers, heads of year, and heads of careers, as well as a postal survey of parents. the report considers choice processes, the relative influence of mediating agencies, the influence of school organisation on choice and then models a number of scenarios representing different contexts of school influence
