Understanding images: cognitive enrichment through effective use of images
This paper argues that there is a need for more research into understanding the nature of images and the ways in which images can be used to support learning and teaching. It also argues that a better understanding of images given the increased range and complexity of different information and communication tools and associated affordances and metaphors. In particular it explores the role of imagery to support communication and community building and development of understanding through cognate mapping. The paper considers different forms of visual representation and highlights some of the key image literature. It concludes by focuses on some concrete examples, in Medicine and Economics, to illustrate the potential of visual mapping as a cognitive tool to facilitate learning.

Abstract
