This is a short commentary on a Round table feature about Open Access. It gives the reasons who Open Access is necessary in the struggle to improve world health. Access to health research information is still poor throughout most of the developing world, despite the fact that these regions shoulder most of the world's health problems. Open Access provides permanent, free access for all, either through Open Access journals or through Open Access repositories or archives.
