"Echo’s Bones" and Beckett’s disembodied voices

"Echo’s Bones" and Beckett’s disembodied voices
"Echo’s Bones" and Beckett’s disembodied voices
This article concerns Beckett's unpublished short story "Echo's Bones". It is a strange story that follows the exploits of Belacqua, the protagonist of More Pricks Than Kicks after his death in "Yellow", the penultimate story of the volume. The myth of Echo and Narcissus is one that Beckett returns to again and again in his work. I will be discussing the recurring themes associated with the myth and how the story, although unpublished, has an importance in relation to Beckett's earlier and later texts.

Abstract

This article concerns Beckett's unpublished short story "Echo's Bones". It is a strange story that follows the exploits of Belacqua, the protagonist of More Pricks Than Kicks after his death in "Yellow", the penultimate story of the volume. The myth of Echo and Narcissus is one that Beckett returns to again and again in his work. I will be discussing the recurring themes associated with the myth and how the story, although unpublished, has an importance in relation to Beckett's earlier and later texts.
