Most states contain considerable cultural diversity. Some liberals-let us call them liberal-nationalists-believe that it is important nevertheless for these states to forge or sustain a shared national identity the realization of liberal values is jeopardized. In effect, liberal-nationalists of this kind believe that national community is a precondition for the viability of political community as liberals conceive it.
