Perfectionism, parrhesia and care of the self: Cavell and Foucault on ethics and politics
This essay explores an intuition initially expressed by Arnold Davidson that Cavell's reflections on the topic of moral perfectionism involve "working toward a conceptualization of ethics that shares with Foucalt and Hadot the idea that what is at issue is not only a code of good conduct but a way of being that involves every aspect of one's soul" and most recently supported by Cavell's own characterization of moral choice having to do, as it is sometimes put, with being true to oneself, or as Michel Foucault has put the view, caring for the self"
