A method to improve the quality of an audio signal reproduced by a compact loudspeaker array in a private sound zone
Private sound zones can be generated using loudspeaker arrays and methods for beamforming. This paper addresses the problem of quality degradation of the reproduced field at the listener’s position, especially in terms of deviation from the desired frequency response. A method is proposed that aims to accurately reproduce a desired signal at the listener’s position while minimizing the acoustic energy density in the so-called quiet zones. This method is compared against the Delay-and-Sum beamformer and the Pressure-Matching Method by means of numerical simulations under free-field conditions. Results show that the proposed method allows for accurate reconstruction of the signal at the listener’s position. The effects on the directivity of the array radiation pattern are analyzed and discussed.
