Quel fatigue ... quelle barbarie!: The Visitor's Torment
The chapter presents new perspectives on visitors' responses to the Great Exhibition - perhaps the most popular exhibition ever mounted in the Great Britain as measured in the proportion of the population that attended. Research shows not only the notoriety of the exhibition but also its patterns of attendance: the fatigue, the confusion and the crowding of the displays, as well as their fascination. The chapter also reveals the myriad of new statistical techniques used to measure visitors by class, gender, time of entry, consumption of food, weather and price, and how this information was then replayed to visitors themselves.
