Keeping buses moving: role of intelligent transport systems
The ever-increasing problem of traffic congestion in towns and cities presents a huge challenge, in particular to Local Authorities. The push to keep traffic moving, and the need to encourage modal shift away from the car and towards public transport, means that any measures to improve bus travel are highly desirable. This paper illustrates a range of ways in which Intelligent Transport Systems can improve bus operations, with an emphasis on 'keeping buses moving'. It also highlights, however, that such innovations need to be backed up by the necessary funding and commitment, and improved skills in systems specifications and subsequent operations and management.
