Wake studies of a 1/30th scale horizontal axis marine current turbine
A 0.4m diameter horizontal axis Marine Current Turbine (MCT) was tested in a circulating water channel. The model turbine was designed to facilitate variable speed operation with full pitching blades and varying rotor yaw. The turbine performance and wake characteristics were determined over a range of flow speeds and rotor thrust coefficients.
Results from the water channel tests indicated that downstream centreline velocity deficits were greater than expected. Blockage type effects (where the velocity was greater than the inflow velocity) occurred around the sides of the rotor disk.
Furthermore, it observed that a Froude scale effect was present that lead to a significant variation in the water surface elevation in the circulating channel. Although this effect was amplified at this model scale, it is expected that reasonable variations in water level could also occur over a full scale MCT array when the devices are in operation.
A momentum-based model was developed that showed good agreement when predicting the model centreline velocity deficits. The model incorporated corrections to account for the changes in the water surface elevation and low velocity deficits that occurred in the circulating channel.
This work will contribute to our understanding of the full-scale operational limits of MCT arrays. It will also give an insight into the optimisation required for implementing this new technology.
