Forefoot bursitis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: is there a link to peak plantar pressures?

Forefoot bursitis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: is there a link to peak plantar pressures?
Forefoot bursitis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: is there a link to peak plantar pressures?
Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) frequently present with pain under the metatarsal heads. Bursitis can give rise to such symptoms in the forefoot, but is rarely diagnosed clinically. Foot pressures are reported as being increased within the forefoot of patients with RA and have been linked to pain during walking but there is scarcity of evidence to link foot pressures with bursitis. The objective of this study was to identify bursitis in the forefoot using diagnostic ultrasound and explore the relationship of this to peak plantar foot pressures.

Abstract

Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) frequently present with pain under the metatarsal heads. Bursitis can give rise to such symptoms in the forefoot, but is rarely diagnosed clinically. Foot pressures are reported as being increased within the forefoot of patients with RA and have been linked to pain during walking but there is scarcity of evidence to link foot pressures with bursitis. The objective of this study was to identify bursitis in the forefoot using diagnostic ultrasound and explore the relationship of this to peak plantar foot pressures.
