Exploring the global and the specific language of 'race' through the discourses of Whiteness and Blackness: a cross-national comparison between university students in Australia and the UK
'Race' quite rightly remains a highly contested notion with the social sciences as there still is a tendency to focus primarily on 'Blackness as negative Otherness'. Whiteness has largely been ignored as topic of investigation. This is now slowly changing. Nonetheless, there is little research which takes a comparative perspective in focusing on the understandings of Whiteness and its meanings in different cultural environments. We assert 'race' is at once global and specific. Consequently, this paper aims to outline a forthcoming study that will specifically examine the degree of student's understandings of whiteness and blackness.

Abstract
