The article notes that the three early thirteenth-century Middle English saints' lives of the 'Katherine Group', although they popularise and simplify their Latin sources for an English-speaking audience, are nevertheless more sophisticated stylistically and intellectually than other English saints' lives of the period, and explains this by the variety of the audiences for which they were intended: the lay congregation to which two of the three Lives are explicitly addressed, and the comparatively well-educated women in religion whose needs they also take into account.

Abstract

The article notes that the three early thirteenth-century Middle English saints' lives of the 'Katherine Group', although they popularise and simplify their Latin sources for an English-speaking audience, are nevertheless more sophisticated stylistically and intellectually than other English saints' lives of the period, and explains this by the variety of the audiences for which they were intended: the lay congregation to which two of the three Lives are explicitly addressed, and the comparatively well-educated women in religion whose needs they also take into account.
