Even bird species which do not nest or feed arboreally may be affected by elm death and felling, when understorey growth ceases to be depressed by the tree canopy. Yet assessment of the impact of Dutch elm disease is complicated by the way birds seem to prefer to remain within the area they know, even when the habitat is altered.

Abstract

Even bird species which do not nest or feed arboreally may be affected by elm death and felling, when understorey growth ceases to be depressed by the tree canopy. Yet assessment of the impact of Dutch elm disease is complicated by the way birds seem to prefer to remain within the area they know, even when the habitat is altered.
