Polyphase development of slaty cleavage and the confrontation of facing directions in the Devonian rocks of north Cornwall

Polyphase development of slaty cleavage and the confrontation of facing directions in the Devonian rocks of north Cornwall
Polyphase development of slaty cleavage and the confrontation of facing directions in the Devonian rocks of north Cornwall
UPPER Devonian rocks in north Cornwall are flanked to the north and south by Middle Devonian rocks1. For many kilometres to the south, recumbent folds with a well developed slaty cleavage parallel to their axial planes face northwards whereas, for many kilometres to the north, recumbent folds with an equally well developed axial planar slaty cleavage face southwards2. Structural and stratigraphie relationships on a regional scale preclude an interpretation of this change in facing direction in terms of orthodox refolding. There is, moreover, no local evidence to support such an interpretation.

Abstract

UPPER Devonian rocks in north Cornwall are flanked to the north and south by Middle Devonian rocks1. For many kilometres to the south, recumbent folds with a well developed slaty cleavage parallel to their axial planes face northwards whereas, for many kilometres to the north, recumbent folds with an equally well developed axial planar slaty cleavage face southwards2. Structural and stratigraphie relationships on a regional scale preclude an interpretation of this change in facing direction in terms of orthodox refolding. There is, moreover, no local evidence to support such an interpretation.
