Evaluation of RZ- and NRZ-format 40Gb/s transmission over embedded standard fibre employing chirped fibre grating dispersion compensators

Evaluation of RZ- and NRZ-format 40Gb/s transmission over embedded standard fibre employing chirped fibre grating dispersion compensators
Evaluation of RZ- and NRZ-format 40Gb/s transmission over embedded standard fibre employing chirped fibre grating dispersion compensators
A comparison of the NRZ- and RZ-transmission formats is investigated for 1.55µm 40Gbit/s dispersion compensated standard fibre transmission. The RZ-format is shown to give a 2-fold increase in transmission distance compared with the conventional NRZ-format. In addition, a larger power margin is allowed. System guidelines are proposed relating the pulse width, equalizer spacing, input power and maximum transmission distance.

Abstract

A comparison of the NRZ- and RZ-transmission formats is investigated for 1.55µm 40Gbit/s dispersion compensated standard fibre transmission. The RZ-format is shown to give a 2-fold increase in transmission distance compared with the conventional NRZ-format. In addition, a larger power margin is allowed. System guidelines are proposed relating the pulse width, equalizer spacing, input power and maximum transmission distance.
