Investigating the factors affecting the relationship between the Envisat MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index and chlorophyll content: preliminary findings
The Envisat MTCI is a designed to monitor vegetation condition via an estimation of chlorophyll content. To understand fully the
performance of the index and its utility in the provision of scientifically-robust measures of canopy chlorophyll content there is a
need to validate the index across a range of acquisition and environmental conditions. This paper presents an experimental
investigation into two non-canopy factors that may influence the relationship between the MTCI and chlorophyll content: soil
background and sensor view angle. Laboratory-based spectral measurements from two vegetation types over time and a range of soil
background and sensor view angles were used to calculate the MTCI. From this preliminary analysis it was observed that the MTCI
is influenced by soil background at low LAIs, particularly bright and dark soils and this influence is dependent on vegetation type
and the MTCI has limited sensitivity to sensor view angles at nadir ± 30o. Further analyses of the measurements taken will provide
insight into how the non-canopy variables of soil background and sensor view angle influence the relationship between MTCI and
chlorophyll content
