The background to the development of a ’Guide for potential users of SEA’, under the auspices of the European Thematic Network SEANET, is explained. The structure of the Guide is presented and the content is summarized. Some problematic elements of SEA are indicated and suggestions are made for questions to be asked by potential users. Brief descriptions of the examples of SEA applications are that are appended to the Guide are presented.
