This chapter reviews key trends in current policies and practices in foreign language education in school settings.The history of foreign language education is briefly traced; current models and constructs offered by curriculum theorists are analysed; the impact of English on goals and practices of foreign language education worldwide is evaluated; and the evolution of policy for foreign language education in Anglophone countries is discussed, noting tensions between concerns for personal intercultural development, and perceived economic and security needs.
