La herencia ibérica en la poesía popular brasileña: la transformación de las tradiciones populares
This article examiens how, tansplanted to Brazil, significant elements of Iberian popular literary tradition, such as the picaresque, the Carolingian romance and popular religious narratives, underwent a steady and prolonged process of transformation, producing Brazilian pamphlet poems - 'literatura de cordel' - which responded to local concerns, values and tastes, whilst also retaining basic components of the original Iberian material. The analysis is informed by Luiz Beltrao's concept of 'folkcommunication', which helps to provide greater understanding of the role of the Brazilian popular poet as an 'interpreter' within his community. Through him, material drawn from varied sources, including Iberian tradition, has been filtered through to others of his community, and recasted in accordance wtih their perceptions and preferences, and the code of values that undrpins community life.
