Postnatal Depression a Serious Global Public Health Problem? A Synopsis of the International Literature
The paper appraised 89 published papers and documents to establish whether or not postnatal depression is a global
phenomena and at the same time sought to determine if it is a significant public health issue. It is important
to establish if postnatal depression is indeed a
global health concern as this knowledge will stimulate the
development of health care that is appropriate to diverse
populations. It is essential to ascertain whether postnatal
depression is a public health problem because such information has the potential to promote the development of policies that reflect this which in turn will attract funding to support perinatal mental health care and research.
