Research in the field of optical properties modification of glasses by recording strong electrostatic fields in the bulk of material has been carried out for almost two decades. Recent achievements in second-order optical nonlinearity enhancement in glasses with high nonlinear refractive index, poling assisted modification of glasses with metal nano-particles and demonstration of high conversion efficiencies in periodically poled silica fibres are reviewed
