A method for describing quantitatively the information, redundancy and error in digital spatial data
A method for describing quantitatively the information, redundancy and error in digital spatial data
A new method for describing the information, redundancy and error in digital spatial data is presented. By modelling the spatial dependence in a given variable it is possible to determine the amount of measurement error in each observation. Then for a given sampling strategy (support sample size, and sampling scheme), it is possible to determine the proportion of underlying variation that is informative and the proportion that is redundant. The effect of sampling strategy on information is demonstrated for measurements of the red reflectance of a field of pasture.

Abstract
A new method for describing the information, redundancy and error in digital spatial data is presented. By modelling the spatial dependence in a given variable it is possible to determine the amount of measurement error in each observation. Then for a given sampling strategy (support sample size, and sampling scheme), it is possible to determine the proportion of underlying variation that is informative and the proportion that is redundant. The effect of sampling strategy on information is demonstrated for measurements of the red reflectance of a field of pasture.
