A sideways look at gender and sibling relationships over time

A sideways look at gender and sibling relationships over time
A sideways look at gender and sibling relationships over time
Gender as a social category and as a lived relationship between men and women, psychically, culturally and materially, is constructed through and structures every aspect of daily life. This includes the dynamics of relations and everyday mundane interactions between brothers and sisters, in childhood and through adulthood. This paper will address the sideways (lateral) construction and everyday interactive negotiation of gender that is often a taken-for-granted part of sibling relationships, highlighting power and time. It will use four longitudinal case studies of children and young people's relationships with their sisters and brothers, drawn from the 'Your Space! Siblings and Friends' project as part of the Timescapes study, to explore how the construction, negotiation and contestation of gender and sexuality is embedded in their interactions, and demonstrate both continuity and change over time
