Heat generation at crack-tips and its effect on thermoelastic isopachics

Heat generation at crack-tips and its effect on thermoelastic isopachics
Heat generation at crack-tips and its effect on thermoelastic isopachics
It has been approved that the stress intensity factor (SIF) can be obtained from the thermoelastic data. This has been validated with experiments. The agreement between the thermoelastic results and the theory is excellent. However, there is a larger non-linear region of thermoleastic data compared to the theoretical plastic region at the crack-tip.
A finite element (FE) model was constructed that modelled both the stress field and the heat generation. The results show that the non-linear region occurs as a combination of plasticity and heat conduction from the crack-tip.

Abstract

It has been approved that the stress intensity factor (SIF) can be obtained from the thermoelastic data. This has been validated with experiments. The agreement between the thermoelastic results and the theory is excellent. However, there is a larger non-linear region of thermoleastic data compared to the theoretical plastic region at the crack-tip.
A finite element (FE) model was constructed that modelled both the stress field and the heat generation. The results show that the non-linear region occurs as a combination of plasticity and heat conduction from the crack-tip.
