The dynamic behaviour of a mono-hull in oblique waves using two- and three dimensional fluid-structure interaction models
The dynamic behaviour of a mono-hull in oblique waves using two- and three dimensional fluid-structure interaction models
Two- and three-dimensional idealisations for a mono-hulled vessel, treated as a flexible structure, are used to predict and compare the dynamic characteristics in vacuo, hydrodynamic coefficients and the wave induced responses and loads in regular oblique waves. The idealisations consist of two-dimensional beam/strip theory, beam/three-dimensional hydrodynamic and three-dimensional structure/hydrodynamic models. The investigation contains both symmetric and antisymmetric motions and distortions.
The models adopted also allow for the assessment of the effects of fluid action description on beam structural models as well as the influence of structural idealisation on three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction systems. The influence of heading angle on the wave induced responses predicted by the different models is assessed. In addition to wave induced responses, such as bending moments and shear forces applicable to beamlike structures, wave induced longitudinal direct stresses at deck/bottom centre line and deck-side shell junction are evaluated to assess the beamlike nature of the mono-hulled vessel under investigation.
