Examining Web-mediated Experiences: Balancing Qualitative and Quantitative Methods
Examining Web-mediated Experiences: Balancing Qualitative and Quantitative Methods
One aspect of Web Science is examining individual and group experiences as mediated by the Web. Experiences are inherently subjective and unique to each individual, yet this discipline requires that we seek to model them. Both qualitative and quantitative data can yield valuable insights. All too often, however, our training from ‘traditional’ disciplines leaves us equipped with only one half of the equation. Even when there is a full understanding of both qualitative and quantitative methods, it is still important to apply them in such a way as to maximise their strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This poster provides an outline of some of the methods available to Web Scientists, a summary of their strengths and weaknesses, and suggestions of ways to combine them. It describes questionnaires, interviews, expert reviews, case studies, quantitative analysis, and coding qualitative data. It lists useful combinations, including for example the use of statistical analysis and qualitative coding to corroborate findings.
